English for Business Communication

1. The aims of the course
The students would be able to:

enjoy the class while learning the basics of oral communication in a workplace setting; learn idioms, slang and vocabulary words, and expressions; understand and differentiate formal and informal language used by English speakers; express themselves confidently;

learn how to describe things, make opinion and how to discuss things in formal and informal contexts.
2. Objective in the development / improvement course
The students would be able to improve their English communication skill through studying and practicing everyday communication, including skills and knowledge in a workplace setting. This avenue would help them harness their vocabulary skills and speaking skills. Also, it makes the students aware of what is really happening in the real world of office communication.
1. Course description
English for business communication includes listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in business English, dealing with telephoning, job application, job interview and business letters, e.g application letters and inquiries.
3. Number of hours per week that teachers provide academic counseling and advice to students individually
If and only if a student really needs counseling, the teacher is going to entertain the student.
Students can actually see the teacher during office hours especially when the teacher has no classes.
   
1.1 Ethics to be developed
Learning English is not that difficult. So, in order for the students to acquire knowledge about the subject matter, there are some virtues and characteristics students’ should possess or develop:
 
• Apt and common sense-students should comprehend and think the topic carefully before doing something.
 

Diligence- students should study lessons before attending the class. Patience- students should not get frustrated when they cannot fully understand topics. Punctuality- students should attend classes on time. Readiness- students should be ready to embrace the culture of English. Resourcefulness- students should know how to gather data and information. Sharpness- this is an attitude the students should improve in order to cope with movies or audios.
1.2 Teaching methods
There are several ways on how to teach the students the English language. Here are some steps to be used in Listening and Speaking 1:

1.3 Evaluation

Give students some speaking and listening exercises. Observe the students’ individual and group activities. Give some extra sheets for further studies.
2.1 Knowledge to be developed

Students must have a keen understanding of vocabulary words. Students must know some basic patterns in the English conversation. Students must know the proper pronunciation and intonation of a word/phrase. Students must know the proper pronunciation and intonation of a word/phrase.

 
 
2.2 Teaching methods
• In teaching the content, it is very common for them to learn by repetition. So, in order for the students to acquire the knowledge in English communication skills. It is better for them to speak over and over again for better understanding and knowledge of the subject matter. Excerpts would also be used for the students to role play some scenes in news reporting.
2.3 Evaluation

Give some pronunciation drills. Give some seatworks for pattern English. Prepare homeworks for students.
3.1 Intellectual skills to be developed
• English for Business Communcation is more on the speaking aspect part. So, in order the students to cope with the speaking activities in the class, it is best for them to prepare their intellectual knowledge to survive in the class.
3.2 Teaching methods
• Since the students are new to this kind of course, the teacher should give easy tasks in the beginning. Some exercises and games are helpful to encourage them to participate in the class. Gradually, the teacher should give average then a little difficult task for them to be prepared in the next course.
3.3 Evaluation

Give some speaking and writing tests. Create some games in speaking.
4.1 Interpersonal skills and responsibilities to develop
Interpersonal ability is achieved through constant communication and mingling with people. Confidence is also important to harness interpersonal skills. Let the students do homeworks and speaking activities to develop their skills and take charge of their own responsibilities in learning the English language
4.2 Teaching Method
• Motivation is necessary to achieve better results. Also, showing some clips for them to follow would be best for learning.
4.3 Evaluation

Simulation is the best way to evaluate students on this part. Seatworks and homeworks should be given to students.
5.1 Skills in numerical analysis, communication and information technologies to be developed
• The use of e-learning is very much helpful in the numerical and communication information technologies to the students.
5.2 Teaching methods

Let the students sometimes browse or research some topics related to the syllabus on the net. Let the students use PowerPoint program for presentations and discussions.
5.3 Evaluation
• Let them do some oral speaking test. Also, let them listen to news reports and have them try to imitate how news reporters speak and deliver the news.

1. Evaluate the effectiveness of strategies course by students
Evaluations made by students can be seen in a paper distributed by the Academic Office of RMUTL.
2. Evaluation of teaching strategies
Teaching strategies that have been implored in this course vary from one part to another. Most importantly, motivating the students to speak more either intrinsically or extrinsically has been the most effective in its all forms.
The teacher should give more activities to students for them to improve their speaking skill. Moreover, the teacher should give the students to express themselves. Lastly, the teacher must allocate time outside of classroom for listening comprehension times.
4. Verification of student achievement standards
Teaching English for Business Communication to BBABA 3.6 is really challenging as it is a subject that is a part of the new curriculum. All they need is motivation to pursue better skills in English. The teacher must guide the students to improving their skills in speaking
5. Review and action plan to improve the effectiveness of the course
The teacher will give more activities in speaking for them to understand the rudiments of the course.
