Critical and Analytical Reading

The students would be able to:

Enjoy the class while reading short stories and analyzing the short stories and poems Express themselves by forming opinions and analyzing the selections; Learn how to interpret the given information;
          At the end of the course, students should be able to:

          1. Write their own analysis of the stories presented to them using the format learned inside
the    classroom.           2. Identify the moral lesson manifested in the selection and relate it to the present times its  
relevance.
          3. Compare and contrast the cultures during that era to the present time.  
This course will engage students in a focused study of contemporary literature written
over the last several decades.
If and only if a student really needs counseling, the teacher is going to entertain the student.

Students can actually see the teacher during office hours especially when the teacher has no classes.
       Learning English is not that difficult. So, in order for the students to acquire knowledge about the subject matter, there are some virtues and characteristics students’ should possess or develop:

Apt and common sense-students should comprehend and think the topic carefully before doing something. Diligence- students should study lessons before attending the class. Patience- students should not get frustrated when they cannot fully understand topics. Punctuality- students should attend classes on time. Readiness- students should be ready to embrace the culture of English. Resourcefulness- students should know how to gather data and information. Sharpness- this is an attitude the students should improve in order to cope with movies or audios.
There are several ways on how to teach the students the English language. Here are some steps to be used in Contemporary Literature:

Starter/Warm Up – giving illustrations Introduction of the topic Reading of the short stories/novels/poems Sharing of the analysis on the given selections and giving its moral lesson. Watching short stories and giving its moral lessons.

           -   Conclusion
-   Give students some selections that they will analyze and share to the class their analysis.
-  Observe the students’ individual and group activities.
 -  Give some extra sheets for further studies
Students must have a keen understanding of vocabulary words. Students must know some patterns in analyzing short stories/short movies and novels.  Students must know the proper pronunciation and intonation of a word/phrase.

 
In teaching the content, it is very common for them to learn by repetition. So, in order for the students to acquire the knowledge in Contemporary Literature, it is better for them to speak over and over again for better understanding and knowledge of the subject matter  and share their analysis in each selection.
Give some seatworks for analysis. Prepare homeworks for students.

 
Listening is more on hearing and comprehension. So in order the students to cope with the selections to be used in the class, it is best for them to prepare their intellectual knowledge to survive in the class.
Since the students are new to this kind of course, the teacher should give easy tasks in the beginning. Some exercises and games are helpful to encourage them to participate in the class. Gradually, the teacher should give average level first then a little difficult task for them to be prepared in the next course.
Give some exercises in analyzing some selections . Download some movies for actual analysis.

 
Let the students do homeworks to develop their skills in analyzing short stories/novels/ poems and take charge of their own responsibilities in interpreting the given selections .
Motivation is necessary to achieve better results. Also, showing some clips for them to follow would be best for learning.
Seatworks and homeworks should be given to students.
The use of e-learning is very much helpful in the numerical and communication information technologies to the students.
Let the students sometimes browse or research some topics related to the syllabus on the net. Let the students use PowerPoint program for presentations and discussions.

 
Give the students some listening and comprehensions tests. Also, provide some role plays or debatable topics in order for them to improve their speaking skill.

The students will analyze some stories assigned to them.
Teaching students slowly is way more recommendable for more better precision. Listening sometimes could attract students especially audio with native speakers of English. Constant and repetitive learning are important in teaching English Conversation.

 
The students would likely get interested and enjoy the class with more speaking activities. More on analyzing stories and relating it to their personal life. Role plays and games are also important in the class.
Verifying the students achievement standards would be best tested during discussion.
Have more speaking and listening activities for the students. It is also best if they do simulation inside and outside classes.
